Sunday Outreach
On designated Sundays each month, Heritage Church’s collection is given to a chosen charitable organization. Beginning in October 2008, Heritage began donating the collections taken on both the first and third Sundays of the month.
In 2008, Heritage gave nearly $10,000 to worthy charities. Below is a list of organizations that we contributed to in 2008: |

Health Resource Center of Cincinnati |

The Health Resource Center of Cincinnati Inc. is a nurse managed clinic specializing in mental health and urgent care for the homeless and indigent of Greater Cincinnati. Services are provided for a sliding scale fee beginning at $0 (for clients 200% or below the federal poverty level). Those served by the center are indeed clients who fall between the gaps of the formal health care structures in our city. |

Children International Program |

February’s Outreach collection benefited Dominic Balingbing, the boy from the Philippines sponsored by the children in our Religious Education program through Children International. The children generously give money each week in their classes to make it possible for Dominic to go to school. While going to school is the most important purpose for giving, this outreach collection will help Dominic above and beyond the minimum requirement, such as buying some new clothes and shoes, or maybe a birthday present this year. This Outreach is an investment in a boy who feels hope for his future.

Oxfam America |

Oxfam was founded in 1970 as an affiliate of Oxfam International. Its goal is to end poverty through "saving lives, strengthening communities, and campaigning for change." Oxfam America works on the scene, in poor communities around the world, helping people gain the hope, skills, and direction to create a new future. It seeks to address social injustice through advocacy, public education, and emergency assistance programs. Specific issues that Oxfam works on include making a living, natural resources, peace and security, equality for women, indigenous and minority rights, and global trade. They are also currently focused on the humanitarian emergency in Darfur.

Fernside |

Fernside is a local non-profit, non-denominational organization offering grief support, advocacy and education for children and teens who have lost a parent, and for adults with children who have lost a partner or spouse. Fernside is the nation's second-oldest children's grief center, and, in 2001, became an affiliate of Hospice of Cincinnati, dedicated to creating a comprehensive bereavement program to address the unique grieving needs and experiences of children and adolescents. The Cincinnati Enquirer wrote of Fernside, "At its core, Fernside is about treating death with honesty, and children with dignity." |

Natalie Fossier Memorial Fund |

May 4 would have been the birthday of Natalie Fossier, the young girl who, tragically, was killed by a falling tree branch in the great snowstorm in February 2007. Natalie's parents established the Natalie Fossier Memorial Fund in order to continue the vision and dreams of their daughter, who particularly loved helping others, reading, and animals. Some of the beneficiaries of Natalie's efforts while she was alive, and since then of money from the Natalie Fossier Memorial Fund, are: Locks of Love; purchase of books for her schoolmates at McCormick Elementary;Clermont County Humane Society; local nursing homes; outreach and support of other grieving parents; Memorial scholarship fund for Milford School District.

World Food Program |

As the food assistance arm of the United Nations, World Food Program uses its food to meet emergency needs and to support economic & social development. The Agency also provides the logistics support necessary to get food to the right people at the right time and in the right place. WFP works to put hunger at the centre of the international agenda, promoting policies, strategies and operations that directly benefit the poor and hungry. Our 10-12 year old RE class also sponsored an “Empty Bowl” lunch to benefit WFP.

Heartland District Midwest Flood Relief Fund |

Recent flooding in the Midwest has left many of our UU neighbors and friends in dire straits. In Columbus, Indiana, some families without insurance have lost everything. The scope of the devastation in Iowa alone will impact the economy there for years. Our Outreach Collection this month will go to the Heartland District Midwest Flood Relief Fund, which will be used to help those families, congregations and communities who have lost so much to the waters.

The Knoxville Relief Fund |

We are all deeply saddened by the tragic shooting at the Tennessee Valley UU Church (TVUUC). In response to the Knoxville shooting, the UUA has set up a special fund, administered by the UU Trauma Response Ministry Team. This Sunday’s collection will go to the Knoxville Relief Fund, which is already bringing ministry, spiritual care, and practical financial assistance to those most affected by the shooting.

ECO (Environmental Community Organization) |

ECO is dedicated to the mission of holding corporations and our government accountable to our community for maintaining and restoring our environment. HUUC will be working with ECO on an eco-justice project to help residents in Spring Grove Village, right in the heart of the area that has multiple pollutions sources, to advocate for their right to clean air, and to hold the polluters accountable. Doctors Without Borders |

This offering will go to Doctors Without Borders' relief efforts in Haiti. Doctors Without Borders is an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care. Their teams are working in Haiti to provide assistance to those affected by tropical storms and hurricanes in Haiti. In some cases, survivors were without clean water, sufficient food, or medical care for weeks.

Cincinnati Freestore Foodbank |

The impact of the winds from Hurricane Ike and the ongoing financial and mortgage crisis has left many of our neighbors in dire need and has depleted the stores of our local foodbanks. The Freestore Foodbank responded to this crisis by implementing a disaster relief food distribution operation. The sheer number of people receiving aid has greatly depleted their food inventory. With the holidays closely approaching, donations are immediately needed to allow the Freestore Foodbank to continue to serve the community.

The League of Women Voters established the Education Fund in 1957 to "encourage the active and informed participation of citizens in government and to increase understanding of major public policy issues." The League provides factual and non-partisan information on candidates and ballot issues to communities all across the country.

United Nations AIDS Programme |

The United Nations AIDS Programme works to eradicate AIDS worldwide. UN Development Programme Administrator, Kemal Dervis, notes, “The progress we make in addressing AIDS will contribute to our efforts to reducing poverty and child mortality, and to improving nutrition and maternal health. At the same time, progress towards the other Goals, such as tackling gender inequality and promoting education, is required if we are to halt and reverse the spread of AIDS.”

They offer energy-saving weatherization services to help defray energy costs and improve the quality of life for low income, disabled and elderly homeowners. PWC gives a hand-up toward self-sufficiency, not just a hand out. |
